BEYOND THE SEA (2004)

Spacey channels Darin

A lifelong fan pf Bobby Darin (1936-73), I thoroughly enjoyed the fun if flawed biopic BEYOND THE SEA, produced, directed and starring Kevin Spacey. Despite his being a decade too old, Spacey looks a lot like Darin, thanks to makeup, mimickary and a prosthetic honker. But what’s truly amazing is how much he sings like him. Spacey does all the vocals, and because he’s such a fine impressionist, really pulls it off (with the help of Darin’s original charts and orchestrations). Sadly, Darin (born Walden Robert "Bobby" Cassotto) succumbed of heart failure in 1973 at age 37. Thankfully, he's still alive in his music and in Spacey's lovingly crafted tribute. (Trivia note: Sandra Dee, Darin's ex-wife and "America's Sweetheart" in the '50s/‘60s, died shortly after the film was released. But she had viewed it and according to Spacey, loved it.)
