CHARLIE VARRICK (1973)

Oscar Madison he ain't

Like many other movies of '70s, Don Siegel’s lean, mean CHARLIE VARRICK spares no foul language. But emitting from the mouth of a hip, non-comedic Walter Matthew, it’s a treat. Varrick and friends rob a small-town bank, unexpectedly grabbing a gob of Mob moolah. It takes a few twists and no few violent deaths before Varrick is able to elude both the cops and a sadistic, pipe-smoking hit man (Joe Don Baker). Watch for a pretty exciting car chase at the end - with the car chasing a biplane! - and then one helluva surprise ending.
