THE LADYKILLERS (1955)

Landlady or landmine?

In the British classic THE LADYKILLERS, you'll have to look hard to recognize Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom (Seller’s long-suffering boss in the later PINK PANTHER series) – both because they’re so young and so heavily disguised. But not being able to recognize the actors in British films is part of what makes them so different from American films – we're able to focus on the characters rather than on the actors playing them. This is a hilarious story about five, not-so-bright robbers led by "mastermind" Guinness. Posing as classical music quintet, they rent a room in a little old lady’s home, presumably in which to rehearse (they use a phonograph record to simulate their playing) but actually it's their hideout. Whether they'll be tripped up is never much in question – it's how that makes this movie so much fun.
