MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE (1948)
Home, sweet money pit
THE MONEY PIT (1986) is Tom Hanks funny, but the film it’s based on, MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE is Cary Grant hilarious. Adman Jim Blandings and family, fed up with cramped city apartment living, buy a dream house in Connecticut. Blindsighted by the lure of country life, they pay five times what the 170-year old house is worth. The place needs drastic work and becomes a sinkhole for Jim's $15,000 a year income, as well as a test of patience for his long-suffering wife (Myrna Loy) and their lawyer/best friend (Melvyn Douglas). Must viewing for anyone thinking about buying a house or who loves movies.
