SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (1957)

Power of the press

SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (1957) reeks of greed, cynicism, power abuse, and oh yes, more than a hint of sibling incest. It’s about a cruel and controlling New York columnist named J.J. Hunsecker (based on columnist Walter Winchell and played to perfection by Burt Lancaster) and his personal toady, a sleazy press agent named Sydney Falco (perfect name for a despicable character, surprisingly well acted by Tony Curtis). Best line: attempting to humiliate Sydney in front of several people, J.J. orders him to light his cigarette with three condescending words: "Match me, Sydney." Trailer
