WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART (1990)

Shooting an elephant instead of a movie

Director John Huston acted and actor Clint Eastwood directs – so it's fitting that Eastwood directed and also stars as Huston in WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART. It's based on Huston's experiences in Uganda directing THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1952). Huston's obsession to kill an elephant and the hubristically tragic result are why the natives gave him the derisive name. Eastwood's performance – equal parts of Eastwood and Huston – is one of his very best. And the bonus of this film is that you get a great behind-the-scenes peek at the making of this classic about a rum-potted boat captain (Bogie) and a "psalm-singing old maid" (Katie). Watch for the Yikes! scene when Huston verbally annihilates a woman for her anti-Semitic beliefs – and does it in a way that can only be described as charming and elegant!
