PAT AND MIKE (1952)

A hole-in-one right over the net

According to Hollywood legend, when Hepburn first met Tracy prior to their first screen pairing she said, "You're a little short for me, aren't you?" – to which he replied, "Don't worry, I'll cut you down to size." That first co-starring film, the sophisticated and hilarious WOMAN OF THE YEAR (1942), proved they measured up to each other perfectly. And they continued to do so right through their last, GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (1967) – a total of nine mostly great films together. In PAT AND MIKE, their seventh, multi-sport champ Pat (Hepburn) meets the fast-talking, Damon Runyonesque Mike (Tracy), and sparks fly. First they fall into a business arrangement, then they fall into a battle of egos, and finally they fall in love – and along the way, you’ll fall out of your chair at the situations and fast-paced banter between them. Mike describes Pat as having "Not much meat on her but what there is, is cherce." And how cherce this hilarious film is! (Trivia note: Hepburn had the part of Pat down-pat. Off-screen, she really did play near-pro level tennis and golf.)
